# How to get a document notarized online without an SSN

Often yes, but not everywhere. Most online notaries check your identity with a credit-based quiz that needs an SSN, so without one you need a service with a selfie or other alternative check. Proof offers one free of any listed surcharge but still wants a current or past US address; NotaryCam lists a $79 fee for signers without a US SSN.

Quick answer

* Most online notarizations use a knowledge-based quiz built from US records (SSN or ITIN, credit history, US address).
* Proof (Notarize) has a no-SSN option: ID photos plus selfies, but you still need a current or previous US address, and the option only appears when you're eligible.
* NotaryCam lists a $79 fee if the signer has no US SSN. NotaryLive offers a 'Personal Verifier' option if the quiz is unavailable. BlueNotary says it can notarize US-related documents without an SSN using biometric verification.
* OnlineNotary.net serves US residents only. Documents meant for use in another country are a different problem: Proof says not to use it for those.

## The short answer

Most online notaries confirm who you are with **knowledge-based authentication (KBA)**: a short quiz built from your records. NotaryLive describes it as 4 out of 5 personal, credit-based questions answered within 2 minutes.[10](#fn:nl) Proof (the company behind Notarize) says its quiz needs a US Social Security number or an ITIN tied to enough records, such as credit history or vehicle registration, plus at least 6 months of credit history and a current or previous US address.[1](#fn:proof-need)[2](#fn:proof-where)

Without an SSN, you need a service that offers a different identity check. Here's what each one says publicly:

| Service | Without an SSN? | US address needed? | Extra fee listed | Checked |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Notarize (Proof)](https://app.proof.com/referral?campaign=6d869da7-d74d-450f-b3e1-e07ef2627b30) | Yes, for eligible signers: ID photos plus selfies[3](#fn:proof-nossn) | Yes, current or previous (except a Form 1583 set up as Verification of Fact)[3](#fn:proof-nossn)[1](#fn:proof-need) | None listed; base price $25 per notarization (Notarize Network meeting)[8](#fn:notarize-price) | 2026-10-30 |
| [NotaryCam](https://www.notarycam.com/) | Yes[9](#fn:notarycam) | Not stated | **$79** "Signer(s) without US SSN fee" on top of $25 per seal[9](#fn:notarycam) | 2026-10-30 |

| [BlueNotary](https://app.bluenotary.us/session-creation?loginViaSales=true&referralCode=vbdv34e93n) | Says yes for documents about US matters, via biometric verification[11](#fn:bn-faq) | Its signer steps ask for a residential address[12](#fn:bn-signer) | Not stated (unknown); base price $25 (1 stamp, 1 signer)[12](#fn:bn-signer) | 2026-10-29 / 2026-10-30 |
| [OneNotary](https://onenotary.com/) | Unknown. Its pricing page lists "Biometric verification" under identity verification, but doesn't say who can use it[14](#fn:onenotary) | Not stated | Unknown | 2026-10-30 |
| [OnlineNotary.net](https://www.onlinenotary.net/) | Not stated | Yes: US residents only, with valid proof of a US residential address[15](#fn:onn) | Says no extra fees for US residents living abroad[15](#fn:onn) | 2026-10-30 |

"Not stated" means we couldn't find it on the service's public pages. Ask the service before you start a paid session.

## Option 1: Proof (Notarize) without an SSN or ITIN

Proof's help center describes the steps:[3](#fn:proof-nossn)

1. Check the box next to **"I don't have an SSN or ITIN"** on the verification screen.
2. Enter a **current or previous US address**.
3. Take photos of your ID.
4. Take selfie photos, which are compared against your ID.[4](#fn:proof-selfie)
5. Connect with the notary.

Proof says the option only appears when you're eligible: when you upload your own document, when an organization that enabled it sent you the transaction, or when you're signing in the same place as the other signers.[3](#fn:proof-nossn) If you don't see it, Proof says to follow the prompts for another method.[3](#fn:proof-nossn)

Things to know before you try:

* **You still need a US address.** Proof says it requires a current or previous US address for most transactions, and that if you're uploading on your own without one, it can't help.[6](#fn:proof-nosupport)
* **Your ID must be physical and current.** Proof doesn't accept temporary paper IDs, Apple or Google Wallet IDs, photocopies or scans, and in most cases expired IDs.[6](#fn:proof-nosupport) Its ID list accepts a foreign passport with a machine-readable zone but not military IDs.[7](#fn:proof-id)
* **When the quiz fails.** Proof also has a selfie fallback for signers whose quiz fails or can't generate questions, but it describes this as a setting for organizations, and only for signers who are together on one device. Those calls go to notaries commissioned in Michigan, Nevada, New York or Pennsylvania first.[5](#fn:proof-fallback)

## Option 2: NotaryCam (pay the no-SSN fee)

NotaryCam's "Notarize Now" price for non-real-estate documents is $25 per seal including one signer, plus $10 per additional signer, and it lists a **$79 "Signer(s) without US SSN fee"**.[9](#fn:notarycam) So one signer without an SSN and one seal comes to **$104**, based on those listed prices. For real-estate closings, NotaryCam lists a separate $50 add-on for signers without an SSN.[9](#fn:notarycam) NotaryCam's pricing page also advertises service in 145 countries and a 24/7 notary network.[9](#fn:notarycam)

## Option 3: NotaryLive or BlueNotary (alternative checks)

* **NotaryLive** says you can notarize from anywhere in the world if you pass identity verification: usually an uploaded government photo ID plus the KBA quiz. If the quiz is unavailable or you don't pass, it says you can finish the session with its **Personal Verifier** option.[10](#fn:nl) NotaryLive doesn't say on that page how Personal Verifier works or whether it costs extra, so treat both as unknown.
* **BlueNotary**'s pricing page FAQ says that if the document concerns US matters, it can notarize it "even without a SSN" through its biometric verification.[11](#fn:bn-faq) Its signer instructions ask for your name, date of birth, the last four digits of your SSN and a residential address, then KBA *or* biometric verification "as the session demands".[12](#fn:bn-signer) Contact BlueNotary support before you start if you have no SSN, so you know which path your session will take.

## Living abroad with an SSN

If you do have an SSN or ITIN and you're just outside the country, things are simpler. Proof says you can still use it while traveling or living abroad as long as the document is for use in the US, and that you should sign up with your current US address, your most recent one, or a US address where you lived for an extended time.[2](#fn:proof-where) NotaryLive says you can complete a notarization from anywhere in the world.[10](#fn:nl)

## If the document is going to another country

That's a separate problem from the SSN. Proof says documents notarized on its platform are intended for use within the US only, that a foreign country usually wants an apostille from the notary's commissioning state, and that most states haven't set up a process to apostille electronically notarized documents. It recommends a traditional notary instead.[2](#fn:proof-where) BlueNotary says it won't notarize documents going to a foreign embassy.[13](#fn:bn-docs) Ask the receiving office what it accepts before paying for any session.

## The USPS Form 1583 exception

If you need a virtual mailbox, Proof has a special route: when your mailbox provider sets up Form 1583 as a **Verification of Fact** instead of a standard acknowledgment, there's no quiz, so no US SSN, credit history or US address is needed.[1](#fn:proof-need) Our [Form 1583 guide](https://onlinenotaryguide.com/guides/usps-form-1583-notarized-online/) covers the details and the two IDs USPS requires.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I get something notarized online without a Social Security number?

Yes, at some services. Proof (which runs Notarize) lets eligible signers check 'I don't have an SSN or ITIN' and verify with a current or previous US address, ID photos and selfie photos instead. NotaryCam lists a $79 fee for signers without a US SSN. NotaryLive says that if the knowledge-based quiz is unavailable or fails you can use its Personal Verifier option. BlueNotary says it can help with US-related documents without an SSN through biometric verification. OnlineNotary.net serves US residents only.

Can I use an ITIN instead of an SSN?

On Proof, yes: it accepts either a US Social Security number or an ITIN for the identity quiz, as long as the number is tied to enough records (such as credit history or vehicle registration) to generate questions. We didn't find a public statement about ITINs from the other services.

Can I use an online notary while living abroad?

Usually, if the document is for use in the US. Proof says you can use it from abroad if you have a valid SSN or ITIN, entering your current, most recent or a long-term US address. NotaryLive says you can notarize from anywhere in the world if you pass its identity checks. NotaryCam advertises service in 145 countries.

What if I have never lived in the US?

Proof requires a current or previous US address for most transactions, including its no-SSN option; it says it can't help you on a self-upload without one. The exception is a USPS Form 1583 that your virtual mailbox provider sets up as a Verification of Fact. Whether NotaryLive's Personal Verifier, BlueNotary's biometric option or NotaryCam's no-SSN service require a US address is not stated on the pages we checked, so ask them first.

Can an online notary notarize a document for use in another country?

Be careful. Proof says its notarizations are for US use only, that an apostille from the notary's commissioning state is usually needed abroad, and that most states have no process to apostille electronically notarized documents. BlueNotary says it won't notarize documents going to a foreign embassy. Check with whoever will receive the document before you pay.
