# Can I get a document notarized online in Connecticut?

Not fully online by a Connecticut notary. Connecticut's 2023 law allows a video-witnessed signing on paper, with the original mailed to the notary. It also shuts out remote signing for real estate closings, even through an out-of-state notary.

Can Connecticut notaries notarize online today?
No

No full RON for Connecticut notaries. Public Act 23-28 allows remote notarization over live video, but the signed paper original must be delivered to the notary for a seal, and it can't be used for wills, powers of attorney, health care documents or real estate closings.

RON law (we read the statute)
: Public Act 23-28 (we read it; effective Oct 1, 2023): a Connecticut notary may witness a signing over live audio-video, then the signer mails or delivers the signed paper original to the notary to sign and seal. Not usable for wills, trusts, powers of attorney, health care instructions, living wills or real estate closings, among others.

Max fee for a remote/online notarization (per NNA)
: $10 (paper documents only)

In-person acknowledgment fee cap (per NNA)
: $10

Out-of-state online notarizations (per Proof.com)
: Connecticut recognizes notarial acts performed by notaries of other states except for RON execution of documents related to transfers of real estate. Conn. Gen. Stat. § 1-57.

**Note:** NNA: the Secretary of the State does not interpret the remote notarization statute as authorizing RON. Public Act 23-28 also stops Connecticut from honoring out-of-state acknowledgments by a remotely located signer in a Connecticut real estate closing.

## What Connecticut law allows today

**Public Act 23-28**, effective October 1, 2023, lets a document be notarized for someone who isn't physically with the notary if the two can "communicate simultaneously, in real time, by sight and sound" and the notary identifies the signer (personal knowledge, an unexpired government photo ID, two identity-proofing processes, or a credible witness).[1](#fn:ct-pa23-28)

It stays on paper: after signing, "the individual shall mail or otherwise cause to be delivered the signed original copy of the record to the notary public for certification and execution with the notary's commission signature and official stamp or seal".[1](#fn:ct-pa23-28) The Secretary of the State's notary page links the act.[2](#fn:ct-sots) The National Notary Association says the Secretary of the State "does not currently interpret their remote notarization statute as authorizing RON".[7](#fn:nna-platforms)

**Documents that can't be done remotely** under the act include wills, codicils and trusts, health care instructions, standby guardian designations, living wills, **powers of attorney**, certain probate disclaimers and agreements, and **real estate closings**. A remote acknowledgment for any of those "shall be ineffective for any purpose".[1](#fn:ct-pa23-28)

## Can you still get notarized online from Connecticut?

Usually yes, by using an online notary **commissioned in a state that allows RON**. What matters legally is the notary's commission state and where the notary sits, not where you are: Texas law lets a Texas online notary notarize "regardless of whether the principal is physically located in this state", and Florida's law says the same for Florida online notaries.[4](#fn:tx-406110)[5](#fn:fl-117265) Platforms such as BlueNotary, Notarize, OneNotary and NotaryLive route you to notaries commissioned in states like these.

Connecticut's general rule gives an acknowledgment taken in another state, under that state's law, the same effect as a Connecticut one (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 1-37), but **Public Act 23-28 carved out real estate closings**: that rule, and the out-of-state conveyance rule in § 47-7, "shall not apply" to an acknowledgment or conveyance by a remotely located individual in the conduct of a real estate closing.[1](#fn:ct-pa23-28) Proof's summary says the same: Connecticut recognizes other states' notarial acts except RON for real-estate transfer documents.[3](#fn:proof-ct)

**The person receiving your document still decides.** A bank, court, agency or county office can insist on a particular kind of notarization, so ask them first.[6](#fn:proof-accept)

## When an online notarization may not work in Connecticut

* **Connecticut real estate closings.** Don't plan on an online notary for deeds, mortgages or releases in a Connecticut closing; the 2023 act excludes remotely located signers from the out-of-state recognition rules.[1](#fn:ct-pa23-28) Talk to the closing attorney.
* **Powers of attorney, wills, trusts and health care documents.** Connecticut's own remote procedure can't be used for them.[1](#fn:ct-pa23-28) If you're using an out-of-state online notary instead, confirm with whoever will rely on the document.
* **Recipient rules.** Lenders, title companies, courts and government offices can refuse an out-of-state online notarization or ask for a wet-ink original. Ask before you book.[6](#fn:proof-accept)
* **No physical ID or no US credit history.** Most platforms verify you with a live scan of a government photo ID plus a credit-based quiz. See [getting notarized online without an SSN](https://onlinenotaryguide.com/guides/online-notary-without-ssn/).

## Frequently asked questions

Can a Connecticut notary notarize online?

Not fully online. Public Act 23-28 lets a Connecticut notary witness the signing over live video, but the signed paper original then has to be mailed or delivered to the notary for signature and seal.

Can I use an online notary for a Connecticut real estate closing?

Plan not to. Public Act 23-28 says Connecticut's rules recognizing out-of-state acknowledgments and conveyances don't apply to a remotely located signer in a real estate closing. Ask the closing attorney.

How much does a Connecticut notary charge?

The Secretary of the State says Public Act 26-81 raised the fee for any notarial act from $5 to $10, effective July 1, 2026.
