# Can I get a document notarized online in North Carolina?

Not yet. North Carolina has a remote electronic notarization law, but it only works through platforms the Secretary of State licenses, and none are listed yet. Residents can use online notaries commissioned in other states.

Can North Carolina notaries notarize online today?
Not yet (law passed, not in effect)

Not yet. North Carolina's remote electronic notarization law requires a platform licensed by the Secretary of State, and the Secretary's list of authorized technology providers still says 'Coming Soon'. Meanwhile you can use an online notary commissioned in another state.

RON law (we read the statute)
: N.C. Gen. Stat. Chapter 10B, Article 2, Part 4A (we read § 10B-134.19): an electronic notary may use only a platform licensed by the Secretary of State. The Secretary's 'Authorized Technology Providers' list says 'Coming Soon' (checked 2026-10-31).

Max fee for a remote/online notarization (per NNA)
: Remote notarization not yet implemented

In-person acknowledgment fee cap (per NNA)
: $10

Out-of-state online notarizations (per Proof.com)
: North Carolina recognizes notarial acts performed by notaries of other states, but the statute does not explicitly extend that recognition to remote online notarizations. N.C. Gen. Stat. § 10B-20(f).

**Note:** NC Secretary of State alert: Emergency Video Notarizations (EVNs) are extended to 12:01 AM on July 1, 2027, or until the first license is issued for Remote Electronic Notarizations. Proof says North Carolina's recognition statute does not explicitly extend to remote online notarizations (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 10B-20(f)).

## The law is passed, but no platform is licensed yet

North Carolina calls it **remote electronic notarization** (REN). The statute says "an electronic notary shall use only a communication technology through a platform licensed by the Secretary", with a $5,000 license fee and a background check, and platforms must collect a $5 fee per remote act for the state.[1](#fn:nc-19)

As of our check, the Secretary of State's technology provider page lists "Authorized Technology Providers - **Coming Soon**".[2](#fn:nc-tech) Its eNotary page said it expected newly approved remote electronic notary platforms "in January 2026"; that page hasn't been updated with a list.[3](#fn:nc-enotary) The National Notary Association (Aug 10, 2026): "The Secretary of State has not yet approved remote electronic notarization platforms."[8](#fn:nna-platforms)

**In the meantime**, the Secretary of State's site alert says **Emergency Video Notarizations** (EVNs), a temporary video procedure for North Carolina notaries, are extended "to 12:01 AM on July 1, 2027 or until the first license is issued for Remote Electronic Notarizations".[2](#fn:nc-tech) EVN is not the same as an online notarization through a platform; ask the notary how it works.

## Can you still get notarized online from North Carolina?

Usually yes, by using an online notary **commissioned in a state that allows RON**. What matters legally is the notary's commission state and where the notary sits, not where you are: Texas law lets a Texas online notary notarize "regardless of whether the principal is physically located in this state", and Florida's law says the same for Florida online notaries.[5](#fn:tx-406110)[6](#fn:fl-117265) Platforms such as BlueNotary, Notarize, OneNotary and NotaryLive route you to notaries commissioned in states like these.

One caveat for North Carolina: Proof's summary says North Carolina "recognizes notarial acts performed by notaries of other states, but the statute does not explicitly extend that recognition to remote online notarizations" (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 10B-20(f)).[4](#fn:proof-nc) So check with the recipient before using an out-of-state online notary for anything North Carolina-specific.

**The person receiving your document still decides.** A bank, court, agency or county office can insist on a particular kind of notarization, so ask them first.[7](#fn:proof-accept)

## When an online notarization may not work in North Carolina

* **Real estate.** Deeds are recorded by the county Register of Deeds, which decides what it will record, and closings are attorney-supervised. Ask the closing attorney first.
* **Vehicle titles.** NCDMV requires a North Carolina title transfer to be notarized; see our [car title notarization by state](https://onlinenotaryguide.com/guides/car-title-notarization-by-state/) page before trying to do that online.
* **Recipient rules.** Lenders, title companies, courts and government offices can refuse an out-of-state online notarization or ask for a wet-ink original. Ask before you book.[7](#fn:proof-accept)
* **No physical ID or no US credit history.** Most platforms verify you with a live scan of a government photo ID plus a credit-based quiz. See [getting notarized online without an SSN](https://onlinenotaryguide.com/guides/online-notary-without-ssn/).

## Frequently asked questions

Can North Carolina notaries notarize online?

Not through remote electronic notarization yet. The law requires a platform licensed by the Secretary of State, and the Secretary's authorized-provider list still says 'Coming Soon'. Emergency Video Notarizations are extended until July 1, 2027 or the first REN license.

Can I use an online notary from another state in North Carolina?

Often, but check first. Proof's summary says North Carolina's recognition statute doesn't explicitly cover remote online notarizations, so ask the person or office receiving your document.

How much can a North Carolina notary charge?

The NNA's 2026 fee table lists $10 for an acknowledgment in North Carolina.
