Step by step

  1. Get the right form for your state. POA execution rules are state law. If you're using a bank's or brokerage's own POA form, use theirs; they're the ones who must accept it.
  2. Check whether your state needs witnesses (see the table below).
  3. Ask the recipient whether they accept remote online notarization. Proof's help center says the receiving party "always has the final say".1
  4. Don't sign beforehand. You sign electronically during the session. NotaryCam, for example, tells signers not to sign before uploading.2
  5. Have your ID and a camera ready. Expect a physical government photo ID and a knowledge-based quiz; Proof's quiz needs the last 4 of your SSN or ITIN and about 6 months of US credit history.3
  6. Upload, verify, meet the notary, sign. Providers say most sessions take minutes; NotaryLive says 10–15 minutes.4
  7. Download the notarized PDF and send it to the recipient. OneNotary keeps documents only 7 days on pay-as-you-go, so save your copy right away.5

Witness and notary rules in the three biggest states

State What a POA needs Source
California Either acknowledged before a notary public or signed by at least two qualifying witnesses Probate Code § 41216
Texas (durable POA) Acknowledged before an officer authorized under the laws of Texas or another state to take acknowledgments Estates Code § 751.00217
Florida Signed by the principal and two subscribing witnesses, and acknowledged before a notary Fla. Stat. § 709.2105(2)8

Florida extra step: when a POA authorizes banking or investment transactions under § 709.2208 and fewer than two witnesses are physically with you, Florida requires screening questions. If you answer yes to any of them, or if you're a vulnerable adult, video witnesses don't count.9 Details are on our Florida page.

California note: California notaries can't notarize online yet. Californians use out-of-state online notaries, whose acts California law gives effect to. Read our California page first.

Frequently asked questions

Can a power of attorney be notarized online?

Generally yes, through a remote online notary. Notarize lists Power of Attorney among its document forms. Your state may also require witnesses, and whoever will rely on the POA (a bank, title company or agency) decides whether to accept an online notarization.

Do I need witnesses for a power of attorney?

It depends on your state. Florida requires two subscribing witnesses and a notary acknowledgment. California accepts either a notary acknowledgment or two qualified witnesses. Texas requires a durable POA to be acknowledged before a notary or similar officer.

How much does it cost to notarize a POA online?

For one signer, one seal and no witnesses, the services we checked list $19.95–$25. With two platform-supplied witnesses, as a Florida POA needs, the total is $45 at BlueNotary or NotaryLive and $55 at Notarize or OneNotary, based on their published witness fees.

Can I notarize a power of attorney online for use abroad?

Usually not through these platforms. Proof says it isn't the right tool when an apostille or foreign-embassy acceptance is required, and BlueNotary won't notarize documents going to a foreign embassy.
